Pub 126: The Clarence
May 2025, Portree. We are gathered in a small field, perched on top of a perfectly odd lump of rock, proudly jutting out into the sound of raasay.
The hebridean sun is setting over the black cuilin, casting the final rays of an unseasonally hot day upon us, before the haunting beauty of the gloaming rolls in.
As the cans and drams of the afternoon session start to gently circulate around the body, surrounded by all your best pals, the senses are alive.
"You're alive, you're alive, and the stars are on your side, feel the wonder of the world. You are alive".
Those lyrics, usually cast aside as meaningless tat, take on a whole new life as two thousand people, across all reaches of the vocal scale, sing along with skippinish.
An ethereal experience. A feeling I never thought I'd live again.
That was until I laid my eyes upon the midweek deals menu at the Clarence! £3.90 for a pint of st mungos in hyndland? I never thought I'd see the day. Wednesday night drinking isn't my regular but by god it might have to be. I'll pass on the oysters right enough.
