Pub 118: RADIO
About 6 months ago, I had a review drafted for mango. It was hard not to be fascinated by the place, with a ground floor that felt like a little bit of sevilla right here on sauchiehall street. Geezers with puffy shirts and moustaches, doing wee salsa dances, still all the while drinking pints of venom and puffing elf bars.
Meanwhile, the downstairs club was the single sweatiest, sexiest room in all of glasgow. A sweltering hot basement bar full of couples doing the most intimate tangos. Me and big mitch, out for quiet pints, were probably not the target market so returned upstairs.
Thus, finding out it had closed was devastating news.
Yet, in its place came RADIO. We swung in on Friday night to see what all the fuss was about. And whoever owns it has clearly spent quite a bit of cash doing the place up, as it's almost unrecognisable from its days of castanets and pulsing testosterone levels. It's clearly jumping on the kitty's formula with the live music and spenny pints, but it didn't quite have the atmosphere to match. Will give it another go when the January slump is through.
