Pub 82: Rab Ha's
If you happen to have a similar dopamine algorithm to me, then you'll also have had the displeasure this week of being inundated with tiktoks and reels of the unbearable brewdog boss-man james watt.
His penchant for having the worst accent in the world, the worst wife in the world, and, frankly, being the worst person in the world, puts me at a slight discomfort. And for that reason, I've boycotted his beer and his pubs for a number of years now. My last visit in was during the short stint where I joined the strathclyde beer society, and left promptly after they started dissing on tennents.
I actually dislike brewdog to the point where I try to stay as geographically far away from their pubs and people as I can. Thus, I've swerved hutcheson street and, unintentionally, the charming Rab Ha's for years before finally venturing in for some cosy christmas eve consumption last year.
Rab Ha's is owned by the same people as Babbity's so, combined with the rustic exterior and big reputation, I was expecting fireplaces, sleepy dogs, and an old man with a string instrument and nicotine addiction. The kind of place you'd stop for a brown ale in ye olde times.
Unfortunately, the reality was quite different. It actually just looked like a quite normal boozer. No fireplace, no dog, plenty of old men but absolutely zero instruments. The guinness was upwards of six quid which I also thought was quite rough. One saving grace was that they were showing Shrek on the TV. Mentally, this kept me pretty occupied and I could have been drinking in a back street blantyre bar for all the attention I was paying my surroundings.
I think another visit may be required to assess more accurately. But from this visit, babbitys wins the battle of the wealthy pensioner pubs.
