Pub 130: The Crescent
Mike Scott of the Waterboys is truly one of Scotland great lyricists. Hunners of classics but nothing tops the eternal whole of the moon.
More akin to a greek epic than a song, Scott regales about the near-supernatural vision of a woman who takes one look at the ordinary and sees something spectacular. He talks of seeing a rain, dirty valley, while she sees brigadoon; he sees the crescent, she sees the whole of the moon.
Unfortunately, in the case of this one-dimensional boozer, I think she would take one look at Crescent, and still only see crescent.
I talked only a couple weeks ago about how good a cocktail bar Malo was, and how you could fool yourself into a false sense of sophistication. But when crescent is charging as it does, and you canny speak to each other without Jax Jones blasting in the background, the illusion quickly fades.
